From the President
On Sunday, December 12th at the Art Therapy program at GW we held our winter Open Board Meeting and Workshop with tremendous success! We began the day with the open board meeting, discussing governmental affairs updates from the AATA conference, provided by Jordan Potash, Alternate Chapter Affiliate, who attended the Assembly of Chapters meeting in San Diego. He shared that AATA’s agenda includes making further strides towards licensure on a state by state basis and further establishing the efficacy of art therapy through research.
Although the DC area is not currently being targeted at the national level, this led to a discussion of forming a PATA GAC task force to lay the groundwork of pursuing licensure. In addition, we discussed resurrecting the PATA Research Committee to assist members in pursuing research options and opportunities. If you are interested in joining either committee, please contact Kimberly Hanrahan- Havern, Governmental Affairs Chair or Donna Kaiser, Research Chair, by going to our Contact Page and selecting their names to send them email.
Following the meeting, we enjoyed a wonderful potluck provided by all attendees. After a quick bite, we proceeded onto the true gem of the afternoon: our workshop led by Lisa Raye Garlock, creating “Spirit People”. Lisa has been creating the small dolls, inspired by Kachina and worry dolls, for some time and shared her inspiration for them with us. We began by choosing a special object, such as a stone or crystal, to provide the essence of our figures. Then we fashioned human forms using wire and fabric. The figures were then completed by adding special adornments and finishing touches. The serene atmosphere, connecting with friends old and new, and inspiring the creative muse made this day phenomenal. Plus, free CEC’s to all attendees! Much thanks to GW faculty Anne Mills, Savneet Talwar, Lisa Raye Garlock for coordinating this wonderful workshop.
The board has been working on updating our membership and referral information, which is quite outdated. Thanks to board members Amy Babish and Jordan Potash for working diligently on this process. Our newly revised Membership/Referral Update form is included in this newsletter. Also, we have included a short survey concerning topics the board has discussed recently. We are interested in hearing what our members have to say on these topics, so please tell us what you think! Please take a few minutes to fill this out and update us on any new contact information, add yourself to our referral listing, join a committee, a workshop you’d like to conduct or let us know what your interests are in general in regards to PATA!
We currently have one open board position, that of Public Information. The Public Information Chair is responsible for communicating with the public about art therapy and PATA in general. Filling this position would be a great opportunity for you to network and promote our profession! If you have any questions about these positions or are interested in serving on the board, contact me
